Grove Dictionary of Musical Instruments describes the instrument as a ‘Transverse flute of the Han Chinese’. The instrument is made of bamboo and has six finger-holes towards the distal end of the instrument plus two end-holes on the upper side and two end-holes on the sides of the pipe. The tissue paper which would have covered another hole between the embouchure and the finger-holes is missing. Both ends have bone finials and the head is engraved and coloured with rocks, flowering plants, stork and Chinese characters; Chinese characters in black ink are also found on the head finial. The centre of balance is approximately where the embouchure hole is.
