Description

This model shows Cristofori’s action as it exists in the piano at the Musikinstrumenten-Museum der Universität Leipzig, no.563 for the note c2. Cristofori’s invention is very sophisticated with an escapement mechanism which disconnects the hammer from the impulse of the key without the keylever movement having to stop. He has also already solved the problem of the hammer rebounding by including the ‘check’. Interestingly though, Cristofori provided no mechanism for raising all the dampers together.
